"Hello, how are you?
Good to see you again.
How’s the family doing?
See you’ve made new friends."
"Yeah, I’m fine, not much new
since you and I last spoke."
We chat politely, hold that line--
even share a joke.
Just below the surface
feel that subtle undertow,
cannot change our current course
set so long ago.
So we chat politely,
and only dip our toe…
ignore the undercurrent,
then we turn and go.

Posted at d'Verse Poets Pub, Poetics "Undercurrents." It's been shared once before, but with a poem sharing the same title as the prompt, I couldn't resist sharing again!
Oh Ginny, this is a good one, and the picture with it very well chosen.
ReplyDeletei hate when so much goes unsaid just below the surface. it's quite maddening to me, and i felt that as i read :)
ReplyDeletemmm...that unsaid current can be quite strong...and when you least expect it to will slip you away...
ReplyDeletehmmm touch and go without much commitment..but that is how life treats us. It does not commit to anything, so why should we!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your piece :)
I think we can all relate to those things that go unsaid.
ReplyDeleteHow often we find outselves in this very situation! You have written about this so well, great write.
ReplyDeleteNice! So often we let the undercurrent carry forth, rather than swimming strongly to the shore.
ReplyDeleteHmmm... like reading between the lines.
ReplyDeleteI can certainly relate! Wonderful poem =) Love the nuance.
ReplyDeleteOh, very true! I can relate too! :)
ReplyDeleteVery nice! it is a poem readers can relate too and well told. K.
ReplyDeleteOh Ginny - don't you hate it when that happens? Well done!

ReplyDeleteYep, I can totally relate to this so much so that I can safely say I love this poem!
