In the Path of the 'Rising Sun'

They zeroed in on Eden’s shore
and skirted the periphery
a steady drone at first ignored...
in cloudless skies the war birds soared,
as Sunday wakened, halcyon.
Attacking with impunity
the dragon loose on peaceful quay—
too quickly sleeping fleet destroyed...
with thousands lost in casualties
all-eyes turn toward Rising Sun.
The moments of that fateful day
remain ingrained in history,
as petals drift o’er sunken graves
on oil-slicked sea that still purveys
where countless faced oblivion.

We remember and honor ALL
those who faced the fire and destruction
on December 7th, 1941.
and all servicemen who turned around,
chased the ‘dragon’ down
...and bravely walked into its flames.

Running...

Repainted: 2014 Boston Marathon Finish line.

The colors of the day were blue and yellow—
like golden sun adrift in azure sky;
and those along the route could hear the ‘thunder’
as 35,000 tempoed feet clocked by.

The crowd held sway observing all the runners;
an audience a half a million strong—
till day morphed into night-mare unexpected
when shrapnel-filled explosives ripped the throng.

The color of the day turned red and running,
scarlet dripping on a field of gray—
with unsung heroes bounding to the rescue
—yellow shirts and white hat led the way.

It’s been a year since chaos tore the city
with imagery to last a lifetime long—
like phoenix, runners rise up from the ashes
reminding us to all be “Boston Strong”

Against the Night (Ottava Rima)

We send our soldiers off to foreign land,
to fight for rights for those who are oppressed,
while other countries watch us make a stand
and call us names, and say we are "obsessed.”
So quick are they to burn us with this 'brand.'
Do they forget the freedoms we’ve addressed?
We each are born with basic human rights--
they’d rather judge, with vicious words indict.

I’ve read our “nose is where it don’t belong;”
we’re “tracking ghosts” that really don’t exist.
But who can say who’s right or who is wrong,
or if  we’re chasing shadows in the mist?
They tell us we should try to get along,
while evil waits to strike with angry fist.
I'm glad our soldiers guard against the night
protecting me,  and all who cannot fight.

To Serve and Protect

A young man...
(much like my son,  maybe yours)
raised in a small town,
with lots of friends.
Cub Scouts, Homecoming, graduation…
watched him grow along side and among
his group of friends and classmates.
a good kid by any standard…

He enlisted with the Marines
   to serve and protect,
       to bring peace.

He’ll be coming home soon—
to the younger sister he teased,
and the parents who raised him.
Home to a hero’s welcome,
to be surrounded by all who love him
a celebration of his life…
as they express their last good-bye.

The Maiden and the Witch (Fable)

My first attempt at a children's fable

Long ago in ancient times when knights and princes roamed,
lived a fair young maiden who called a cave her home.
Long dark hair and bright green eyes the color of the fields,
a witch’s spell cast upon her - - it all seemed so surreal.
Forever to be destined to live in this dark cave
unless someone stumbled on her, and maybe then would save.
The witch’s spell had stated, “Only someone brave and true
with spirit and with pure heart may attempt to rescue you.”

One day a young man stumbled on a wood so dark and deep - -
felt drawn to travel through, though he could feel the evil seep.
He stopped to rest beside a stream and there he saw the cave,
and though no knight, he found the strength to summon and be brave.
He heard a voice from deep within calling to his heart,
but he did not yet realize that his trials were to start.
“Oh, who will ever rescue me from this cave so dark and cold,
and from the depths of my despair in this vile place of old?”
He made his way along the path, into the darkness stepped
could hear his footfall echo, as distantly she wept.
Deeper went the young man, into this darkened place,
felt the evil growing...wondered what he’d face.
The cavern opened wider, a flash of fire sailed by,
as angry witch transformed herself into a “dragonfly--
not the lovely insect that most of us have seen
but a fire-breathing monster, with gnashing teeth so mean!
They faced each other squarely; the young man drew his sword,
they danced and fought for hours barely uttering a word.
The dragon drew back one more time before shooting her flame,
the young man finally saw his chance and lined up perfect aim…
the sword found purchase in its throat, the dragon breathed no more,
and in its place the young man saw a witch upon the floor.
The cave lit up like diamonds a thousand candles strong,
the young man saw the maiden who'd been there all along.
He gathered her into his arms,  then together left the cave;
the pretty maiden with green eyes and her young man so brave!
The woods no longer overcast in darkness or in shadow,
the birds were singing sweetly as they rode out of this hollow...

Just one more thing to add before this story ends ~~
will share this 'ancient' secret with all of you, my friends:
the moral to the story of the evil witch is this:

You don’t have to be a prince or knight to get the maiden and the kiss!
