Tales from the "Crypt"

Under the light of a thin crescent moon

two children walked onward, heading for home.

To watch younger cousin, the older agreed,

the younger one thrilled to just follow his lead.

’Twas just after dark when the movie had ended,

they exited theater to make their way back;

the street lights shone dim on the staircase ahead

past church into cemetery, the older now led.

Aware now it was getting late

the older suggested an alternate path

and so they passed through the iron gate

past shadowy headstones where the ‘undead’ await…

She tried to keep up in the eerie half light

she knew that their street wasn’t that far

as he ran up ahead, no longer in sight

—not a sound could be heard, not even a car.

And as he jumped out, she let out a scream

—he thought it was funny (he's really not mean)

It’s a wonder she didn’t faint then and there

at being the victim of impromptu scare!

The rest of the trip was spent trying to appease

with the offerings of bribes and apologies,

the older not wanting to face the wrath

for scaring his cousin on that darkened path

              *  *  *  *  *

To this day, I can still recall

the shadowy path on that long ago night

when I thought that the undead had risen from hell,

my dear older cousin to thank for that fright!

True story, of being "allowed" to accompany my older cousin to a 7 pm movie, already dark out when movie ended. The shortest route home was the road was through the Episcopal church cemetery, a direct line between two streets. My cousins are great, but when not playing "big brother" to protect me, I am apparently "fair game" to be picked on.

"Megan Marie"

The moon broke through the shrouded sky

revealing a ship with tattered sails;

a haunted vessel that sailed the seas,

an enigma masked in mystery,

She’d seen her share of storms and gales

of cannon fire and mutinies.

Whenever her name was uttered or spoke,

it struck fear in the hearts of the hardiest blokes
for all knew the name of the “Megan Marie.”

Some loves are never meant to be

and hearts oft want what they cannot have

And so her captain sailed the seas

trying to forget the woman he’d lost.

And when they gave his eulogy

they spoke of this pirate who scoured the seas

searching in every port of call
for the woman he loved who held the key...

without her his heart would never be free.

And sometimes, on a starless night,

when the white caps stir from a feral wind

the masts arise from their salty grave

and the ancient ship sets sail again,

fulfilling the ancient prophecy

of the one who still searches for Megan Marie.

With Naught to Fear but Fear Itself...

It’s said that on All Hallows Eve, the Spirits are allowed to enter and roam the realm of man…

There’s a chill that abides in damp Autumn days

a feeling of sadness that cannot be shaken

a sense of misgiving, a deep trepidation

as grayness adheres, the mountains encased

in a heavy gray shroud, barren trees now erased.

Midday gives way to a sinister pall

casting the world in an evening like somber

Increased sense of dread tells us “linger no longer!”

composure implodes to deter and forestall

stirring fear uncontained that we’d best not allow…

There’s something that rides on an October wind

a mist of contention that soaks to the ground,

in a fog of misgiving that coats and impounds.

Even those who possess a strong rationale

feel a panic that rattles the sanest and sound

The lost spirits wander, just hidden from sight

concealed under cover of drizzle and gloam,

doomed between worlds, unseen and unknown.

—shadowy creatures that roam undeterred,

searching for pathways to find their way home

Feel the goose bumps that rise to make hair stand on end

hear the wailing that drifts on an inclement wind

light the fires to chase all shadows within

to bury the fears which we can’t circumvent

and the deep-seated nightmares that never relent.

The end of October just hours away–

All Hallows eve ascends even now

the late autumn juncture seems darker somehow…

even now the gates open, the spirits hold sway

but will they be gone by the light of new day?

Ode (Owed) to Poe

Darkness falls, a banshee calls
the headless horseman rides tonight;
a veiled moon shines through Eastern pines
there’s not a single star in sight,
and in the dark the chill wind brings
the scurrying of furry things—
the whisper of  nocturnal  wings.
The spell is cast, our heart pumps faster
the fears inside begin to fester;
the moonlight casts an eerie pall
while spiders spin their silken webs
to catch the nightmares in our heads
above the sleeping masses crawl;
and I wonder…
Is all this that we see or seem
but a dream inside a dream?

A monster lives within us all
a fractured beast that never sleeps
disguised inside discordant minds.
Self-doubts arise, no turning back
like speeding train down one-way track—
if you look close, what will you find?

The cauldron boils, the potion reeks
of newts and toads and buzzard beaks;
   enchantments thrown into the fire…
Zombies rise with sunken eyes—
ghostly wraiths with sallow skin
tattered clothing, gruesome grin
on the hunt with one desire.

The outer fringes of our sight
have raised the curtain to unveil
the hideous creatures of the night—
preoccupied inside our fear
of losing everything that’s dear
we’re  held immobile by the fright!
Our minds play games, “There’s nothing wrong”
yet  from our throat escapes a scream…
... So is it real, this fear we feel?
Or but a dream inside a dream

I borrowed…okay, blatantly stole…the key phrase from Poe’s poem A Dream Within a Dream I honor and a bow to the “master” of  the macabre!

What Evil Lies...

Smiling face with orange skin
seems harmless on first observation—
what foul things can pumpkin do?
What rancid seeds are held within,
such benign thing with orange skin?
And yet we feel such trepidation
every time we look at him.
Expression morphs before our eyes
and slowly takes a new formation:
guileless smile, or evil grin?
As we observe we catch a glimpse
of ugly fire deep inside
blackening its pith and soul—
what once was cheerful turning grim;
what once was bright is turning dim.
Observing change, we must confide
as it decays from inside out
and melts to earth from whence it came,
that we feel somewhat mollified
and hang our hope that it's contained.

…Or Was It?

Into the twilight I went walking
vestige of daylight taking flight,
threshold of evening fast now falling
revealing a veiled and moonless night.
Dry leaves give chase along the footpath
tree limbs stretch bare for all to see...
boney, their arms move in the darkness
—boney wood fingers reach for me—
“Faster” I will my legs, “keep moving.”
“It’s only the wind that creaks the tree.’
Overly active imagination
says: ” No…something darker waits for thee.”
I sprint up the hill past stone wall sentries
as rational thoughts give way to fear—
even the streetlamps flicker slightly
familiar surroundings become austere.
Ever so softly, I hear strange voices…
inaudible words chant spells unknown;
shadowy creatures dance in the half-light
lying half-hidden in the gloam.
“Reveal yourselves!” scream becomes a whisper
—heart palpitating anxiously—
Over my shoulder a chill breath answers
can sense stranger’s eyes intent on me.
Clearing the mountain,  full moon rises
annulling the fears that spirits roam
‘Twas only aberrant imagination
to wrangle my thoughts as I turn home.

Grave Matters

Future unimagined lay before me,
reanimating life was just a dream…
a man of science who observed that lightning
naturally focused power, unforeseen.
Keenly worked in my laboratory—
“Eccentric” whispered those who lived in town;
never knowing what had been created—
subsistence from the corpses underground.
The beauty of the creature once envisioned,
electrified; now hideous to see.
In ceaseless quest for scientific knowledge
now observe that  “monster” lives in me.

When I Do You In...

When I Do You In …

When I do you in
… a single bullet will do it
I’ll use six pillows to silence it,
then get out my trusty “kit”
of bleach, and I’ll go to town
wiping everything down,
And no one will suspect me …
just hoping they don’t see
those dirty towels in the trash bin
                   …When I do you in

When I do you in
… a drop of poison should do it
something exotic from Singapore
in your drink when you walk through the door…
you’ll hardly notice the pain
as you start to convulse when it hits your brain
And no one will suspect me …
just best not test that Long Island Iced Tea
to learn that it wasn’t Gin
… When I do you in

When I do you in
… a knock on the head might do it
I’ll just explain how you tripped and fell,
slipped on that rug when you answered the bell
then quickly hide the trip wire away,
while carefully keeping the cops at bay
and no one will suspect me …
how could it possibly be?
And that hidden wire sooo thin
                  …When I do you in

When I do you in
…a car accident would do it
a cut in the brake line and you will swerve
around that long and winding curve…
over the edge you’ll go;
How could  I possibly know?
They surely won’t suspect me
Unless they just happen to see
my mischievous little grin…
... When I do you in!

Deja Vu

Deja Vu

The mansion looms with windows black,
old portico barely intact;
while boarded panes enhance the gloom
to amplify the sense of doom.

On dead end street we follow track,
‘round ancient home with windows black,
and creeping through a splintered door
we sense that we’ve been here before.

We tiptoe down the creaking halls
our shadows race along the walls,
in austere home with windows black,
till bloody mallet flails attack.

As once the threshold’s crossed, it seems
this house imbeds you in its dreams…
there’s no escape, no turning back
from haunted manse with windows black.
