The Day the Circus Came to Town

The excitement, it was palpable,
the messages, subliminal–

as the show paraded through the streets.

New in town, as yet unknown,

their voices droned in monotone,

with subtle words of cunning and deceit.

They kept the restless crowd engaged,

enrapt with something new;

intrigued inside their mystery and mystique.

And then, it seems, as if on cue,

came the circus grand review

and so our curiosity was piqued.

The tigers were all snarling, locked inside their cages

while the elephants came lumbering up behind;

then the tarot readers, soothsayers and sages,

diviners of some future they’d define.

Acrobatic wonders, gravity defiers;

lovely ladies dressed to entertain,

a swallower of (s)words, a juggler of fire—

a dog and pony show, as promised in their flyer,
all smoke and mirrors cloaking their campaign.

Some of us stood up to leave, too many still remained

to watch the emcee turn into a clown;

his face ever-contorting, expressions alternating–

and so the show continues in this vein,

as he pulls out all the stops to shut us down.

So many sit in silence, they do not made a sound

reporters all were stifled where they stood;

diminished to profanity while watching the insanity

set in motion by the orange clown—

ever since the circus came to town.

Undefined

I’m drawn to the broken poems

written in imperfect rhyme

painting shadows on a page

where emotions intertwine
Where lines may halt without good reason

breaking formulaic rule;
scripted for some revelation–

a purpose-driven, cryptic sign?

Or a puzzle with some hidden meaning,
meant for someone else to find.

Hiding truth protects the bearer,

in life riddled with old scars

candor hurts as well as heals

and yet, defines just who we are.

With no proof that you are worthy

I build a wall till trust is gained
not meant to hide my broken parts
but to protect all that remains.

Our stories lie outside the lines

and sometimes in the broken poems:

where two divergent souls align

in friendship from a different time.

Some might say that “It’s a sign”
I just call it ‘undefined’

Files! Files! Crocodiles!!

And so the emperor stands his ground, lest he be exposed,

lest we see him naked: no makeup or no clothes.

The lies come rolling off his tongue of drug lords on the seas,

while with intent he sinks the boats just to firm his needs.

A war with Venezuela would ensure a longer term

“Leadership Forever,” no matter how infirm.

Don’t say I didn’t warn ya when Zelenskyy made his visit
–Laws and rules do not apply when dealing with ‘illicit’

Deep inside our jester’s head was dropped a craven seed

taking root in blackened heart where it grows like a weed

There can be no dissension, no discourse in the ranks

he certainly will never cede should his favor tank.

He makes you think he’s set his sights on outside evil-doers

trans and gays and blacks and browns and democratic losers

He’s silenced all the laughter, he cannot take a joke

I hesitate to think what’s next, what new hell he’ll invoke
And so he tricks his followers, dividing “us” from “them.”
Yet, no matter what he says, we’re all Americans.

What trouble would he go to, to try to circumvent?
How many would he “disappear” to show his discontent?
as he denies and doubles down against all allegations

won’t even stop at killing to prevent incarceration.

He’s calls arrests on anyone that does not agree,

He’d throw us all in prison, then throw away the key.

A madman with a following, we’ve seen this one before…

and yet among his followers he’s losing some allure.

We may yet land in Florida, among the crocodiles...

Oh! the steps he’s taking, to not “Release the Files.”

Target Practice

May your objectives be honorable;

your courage, unflappable;

   your intentions, unstoppable;

       and may your aim be true.

Can't See the Tree for the Forest...

I used to wonder what would happen

in the realm of never be’s

as I contemplated what we were

I to you, and you to me...

a simple little game I’d play

just to wile the hours away.

Now I listen to the tales you share

and what they might inveigh,

and realize it’s foolish

to play this game I play.

In the forest of each life

there are many trees

it’s difficult to sort them out

once they’ve shed their leaves,

or to know how deep their roots are

by the broken limbs you see.

And I realize it’s grueling
to get back in the game

where everything’s ambiguous

and things are not the same.

And you’re so giddy with the prospect

of finding something new

that you can’t see past the forest

for the tree in front of you.

Sing It Loud!

I’ve always been the quiet one, the observer,

happy to bury my voice in the crowd;

not wanting to draw too much attention

not daring to express myself out loud.

Not brave to speak of my actual feelings

content to let all others shine,

I took to heart your “Don’t make waves”

till everything I said was filtered

ever with that thought in mind.

But comes a time when voices matter

no matter how off-tune we sing

it’s not the quality of sound

but the honesty of which we bring

So shout out from the highest rooftops

make your voice heard in that crowd

even if we don’t sing well

we can do our best to sing it “loud.”

Slow Dancing

The rhythm’s in my head,

my feet tap tap tap to the beat

my lips mouth the words

it’s the end of the day and we sway

to this dance (take a chance)

my head insists (take a risk)

I just don’t know (take it slow)

but the scars on the heart, they insist.

Will it grow? Will it bloom in profusion?

Is it real? Or is it just an illusion—

a chimera, a lark? Or some other delusion?

An undertow? (If I let my guard down will I drown?)

Do I stay? Disembark? (Is it wise to restart?)

Is there a trace (A glimmer? A spark?)

in your words, in the lines you earmark?

As my heart beat, beat, beat, beat, beats like a drum

it resonates, while I succumb to the thrum...

I guard the line (Do you want me to go?)

Or take a chance (How will I know?)

Shall we dance?

  (take it fast)

   (take it slow)

"Junk Mail"

I am just an ‘Occupant’ occupying space,

stamped as Presort Standard, lost among the bills

not good enough for First Class: I travel without frills

Sorted, looked at, tossed away without nary a glance.

With no pathway forward, how can I advance?

A one-way ticket’s all I am and all I’ll ever be

another piece of ‘junk mail,' that’s what you see in me.

Today's Prompt came fro Writers.com for Day 3 of NaPoWriMo: Collect scraps of “junk writing”—spam mail, credit card bills,  etc. Stitch together into a poem. I chose to go a little more literal, and ran with it.

A Work In Progress

Like a puzzle, we put together the pieces—

framing our thoughts, studying the board

deciding what fits where, arranging,

re-arranging until the picture we’ve created

makes sense, everything in its rightful place.

Yet sometimes we think it done, only to find

a piece has gone astray. We search high and low

to no avail, only to discover much later

that the piece was not gone, but hiding in plain sight

waiting to be found, to become part of the whole.

Sometimes we stare too long, trying to discern,

even trying to make things fit where they do not belong.

Some things cannot be rushed, they unfold

as they should, in their own time, not in ours.

And as the puzzle unfolds, we discover correlations

with our own life: words, lines, actions, emotions—

all are small parts of a very large picture.

And sometimes we must step back to see

the beauty of what we have created.

Footnotes

It is a heavy tome I carry

filled with people I have known

in this space where they exist,

their stories bound into my own.

Perhaps that’s why in dreams I tarry

inside this place where we connect;

so many now no longer here

are carried in this book I bear.

The days weigh heavy on these shoulders

I sometimes feel that I can’t breathe;

the years spin by as I grow older,

and life keeps sifting though this sieve.

What hands once held slips though these fingers

I reach for things I cannot grasp,

and so it is I‘ve come to know

that nothing ever stays or lasts.

There won't be any double-takes

the years we live can’t be reprised,

perhaps that’s why I’m drawn to linger

in this space behind closed eyes.

When we’re gone, what will remain?

Where is it that our stories go?

Will we appear in someone’s dreams

...existing in the afterglow

   of this life we used to know
