And the "Flying Fickle Finger of Fate" award goes to...

Another April come and gone

once again, I’m running late:

it isn’t like I didn’t try

but time just got away from me,

and it’s so hard to concentrate

when my other duties call;

all the words evaporate

half-started poems sit unresolved.

It’s not like I procrastinate...

so many other things to do,

and so I share this explanation

now that Poetry Month is through.

I watched as others made the cut—

Dedication?  Or sheer luck?

Still, many may commiserate

like me, not finding full fruition.

I'm looking forward to next year

with guarded hope, and less attrition!

Fingers crossed!

From the 1960’s show Rowan and Martins “Laugh In”

The “Flying Fickle Finger of Fate Award” was used to “laud” (aka poke fun at) celebrities and government officials for something they did, or didn't do. I am obviously neither, but the title still seems fitting!

What's In A Name???

Virtually researching the meaning of my name–

(it’s always important to know who you are)

resisting the ever-present urge for self-depreciation

given though, that the actual name means 'maiden-like'

I think this definition now gets lost in translation...

not that I’m not "practically perfect in every way”

I will submit to add the following notation:

“A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...”

One, Two, Skip a Few...

One two, skip a few...

here I go again!

Took a break, running late,

need to get to ten.

Find a rhyme, fall in line

three four five six seven.

Working late, can’t see straight—

how will I break even?

Number eight is written down,

number nine needs tweaking...

and this one is a total mess

—we’re not even “speaking!”

One, two, skip a few

here I go again

filling lines with nonsense rhyme

just to get to ten!

So ha! Yeah, not my best effort. What happens when you’re away for 3 days and have to play “catch up!” Inspiration credit to my great-nieces, whose "counting rhyme" is now and forever stuck in my head!

The "Yolks" on You!

The self-depreciating quip,

the bantering, the snide remark;

the cracking wise that’s said in jest,

the witticisms, light and dark…

the running joke, tomfoolery

the liveliness and  levity

that carries through the drudgery.

But if perchance, you should believe

that I would write a single line

that gives a nod in your direction?

It’s not because your humor’s skewed.

Let’s put that notion straight to rest!

(Though that could be a part of it)

I’m just easily amused;

and if you’ve not yet realized this,

then you haven’t got a clue!

Subtle is as subtle does...

The irony of every action

a ‘silver lining’ of distraction.

So I’m dropping here for your review:

Tag, you’re ‘it!’  The “yolk’s” on you!

"Company" Clean

Clean the kitchen,
clean the bathroom,
make the beds up
mop the floor.
Fold the laundry,
straighten bookshelf,
put the clean clothes
in the drawer.
Wipe the fan down,
clean out closets
scrub behind things
though obscure.
Company’s coming,
let’s get going…
must be spotless to insure,
a great impression evermore!

Last Laughs --Limericks!!

Written for d'Verse Poets Form For All--How to Write a Limerick hosted by Madeline Begun Kane

His “friends” said he needed to diet
they all thought his weight was a riot
now he weighs less than half
yes, he’s had the last laugh
and those sniggering friends are all quiet!

She often ate baked beans with dinner
believing they’d help her get thinner
when later she’d pass
all kinds of  gas
she'd say better let out than kept in her!

Writing with some hesitation
while seeking the right inspiration
he often incurred
too many words
chalking them up to inflation!

The rhythm may be less than perfect, but they were a lot of fun to write!

Weather (or Not)

To hang our hope for early spring
on such cute, furry critter...
then learn, alas, his shadow seen--
now six more weeks of winter!

*Groundhog Day, an annual tradition held each February 2nd in Puxatawny, PA. There, amongst much pomp and circumstance, this poor little critter is pulled out of his customized burrow to predict by his shadow which it will be: if no shadow, an early spring; if he sees his shadow, then six more weeks of winter!!
(Admittedly, his predictions are even better than our local weather station!!)
