Target Practice

May your objectives be honorable;

your courage, unflappable;

   your intentions, unstoppable;

       and may your aim be true.

Imperfectly Perfect...

Artwork: Cesar Biojol

I like people who aren’t perfect–

the ones with scars and crooked smiles,

the ones with messy homes and messy lives;

the ones that have felt anger and pain

yet did not give up their souls,

the ones that so many would dismiss as ‘different.’

We are all flesh and blood. We are all finite.

We live, we work, we grieve, we love;

we breathe as one inside this fragile dome...

Hate holds no place here.

My "Verse"

Last week at dVerse Poets, Brian Miller had us pondering our "Verse," (as in the commercial for the new IPad Air, with Robin Williams voice over excerpt from the Dead Poets Society. "“We don’t read and write poetry because it’s cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering — these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love — these are what we stay alive for."
"What will your verse be?"
 I hope that my legacy will be one of kindness and generosity, love and friendship, and that I will be remembered as a person of depth and sincerity. For now, here is "my verse" from the lessons that I've learned over time:

From Out of the Shadows

Inspiration is like a stray cat
hiding in the shadows;
timid…skirting the edges
of one’s reach.
It must be fed…nurtured…
and then, only when properly sated,
will it come forward
allowing you to see its true form.

Odd Lots #1: On 'Denial'

Not every thought I have can be expressed or expanded into a poem. Sometimes an idea will pass through my head that I need to write down and want to remember--something that encompasses how I am feeling either about myself and my life, or about something that I've heard, seen, or read that has given me pause to share my feelings on. Each writer or poet I know has these from time to time. They are our little "shorts." I am calling my random quotes "Odd Lots & Brief Thoughts" (or just "Odd Lots" for short) as these will likely be about a little bit of everything.
