Slow Dancing

The rhythm’s in my head,

my feet tap tap tap to the beat

my lips mouth the words

it’s the end of the day and we sway

to this dance (take a chance)

my head insists (take a risk)

I just don’t know (take it slow)

but the scars on the heart, they insist.

Will it grow? Will it bloom in profusion?

Is it real? Or is it just an illusion—

a chimera, a lark? Or some other delusion?

An undertow? (If I let my guard down will I drown?)

Do I stay? Disembark? (Is it wise to restart?)

Is there a trace (A glimmer? A spark?)

in your words, in the lines you earmark?

As my heart beat, beat, beat, beat, beats like a drum

it resonates, while I succumb to the thrum...

I guard the line (Do you want me to go?)

Or take a chance (How will I know?)

Shall we dance?

  (take it fast)

   (take it slow)

It Probably Wouldn't Work Anyways

The seed of a thought has planted itself

in a niche somewhere deep in my brain

it whispers of some kind of normalcy

and murmurs of new possibilities

the idea of which both frightens me,

and lifts from the pain that remains.

Still, I question of the practicality

of pondering such triviality.

it probably wouldn’t work anyways

and inside of this current reality

any hope that I hold feels in vain.

Yet the idea persists, won’t cease or desist,

it even appears in my dreams–

it’s hard to ignore as it plays tug o’ war

insists on existing despite my resisting

rattling me to my core.

It’s not like we don’t have rapport,

yet this doesn’t adhere to the norm...

it takes on theme that isn’t mainstream;

but at this stage, must we conform?

And it might cause a few heads to turn–

I weigh that, while trying to make sense.

It waffles between established routine

taking us both to a different extreme

both exciting and pretty intense.

Have I ever mentioned that I over-think things

no matter how large or how small?

I hash and rehash them and sometimes I save them

take out, think about, and sometimes replace them

while weighing the risks and pitfalls.

And I’ve thought all this out, six ways to Sunday

and won't argue for or against...

so if it gets awkward, well what can I say?

If one of us chooses to just walk away?

At least we both came to the dance.

Perfectly Matched

They had a talent for the Cha-Cha
and a passion for the Waltz
a little bit of Fox Trot
and their Swing was something else;
tapping to the tempo, jivin’ to the beat,
to see the them Jitterbuggin’
was to witness something sweet.
Their Charleston was electric
their Samba was unmatched
when they broke out into Hip-Hop
all the others stopped to watch.
They were both unstoppable
and so hard to ignore,
like a moth takes to the flame
so they took the floor.
Their style was eclectic,
their footwork, animated;
their Boogaloo was boffo
their Tango was X-Rated!
Dance they could and dance they did
they had such rapport…
never once did stumble,
they always pushed for more.

To find the perfect partner
to lead us in the dance,
someone who’s attuned to us
and helps us to advance,
is like capturing a moving train
as it leaves the station;
but rarer still, the soulmate
who has perfect syncopation.

Summer Samba

Sun slowly slides through western sky
preened  for the eve in peach and gold.
Full moon appears in a gauzy pink shirt
to flirt across the deep blue vault;
two star-crossed lovers, unable
to conquer the sky that divides them,
caught by chance in this fleeting dance—
a very tenuous relationship at best
as moon rises in the east,
and sun sets in the west.

Benissimo

A monorhyme is a poem in which each line ends in the same sound

They took the stage so quietly…
and captured our reality,
two lovers in dream fantasy
of steamy sensuality.
They drew us in, so subtly,
such rarely seen ability--
each step grew in complexity,
a lesson in agility.
They move, defying gravity,
bend and stretch erotically--
amazing unique artistry,
their dance: pure sexual poetry.

*Benissimo: i.e. adv. Fine, very well, excellently (Italian)
The inspiration for this came from a  video a friend had posted, a amazingly agile and artistic dance interpretation called "Benissimo" performed by DuoMainTenanT, who performed with Cirque du Soliel. The You Tube video has since been pulled, so I can no longer share the link.
