Grace

Written for d'Verse Poets Pub Meeting the Bar "Imagism" 1/19/2012

Swift silent glide through backyard
to light on lavender buddleia.

Pale lemon trimmed in ebony
touched with sapphire, her

wings pulse softly, finding
balance against breeze;

extends proboscis straw, sips delicately,
finding succor in sweet nectar.

Common yellow swallowtail
graces with her beauty.

  2. balance against breeze...LOVE that line! This is a perfect example of Imagism from my understanding. The language couldn't be more "thingy" but your chosen words sing poetically! And so happy you made it too! :)

  8. I love the gracefulness of a butterfly in flight, such a thing of gentle beauty. You've touched on its delicateness in the middle stanza, yet it seems to covey strength as well. Enjoyed reading this. :)

  9. nicely written Ginny...are you assuming this butterfly is a female or did you check? Remember I did take courses in Butterfly Biology.

    1. I am assuming, and how can you tell? Actually had thought that if butterflies are like other species, than the male may have the brighter colors. Let me know if I have to change my adjectives!!

  10. So far the images that I have either written or seen have been simple. This has a bit of an intellectual flavor and is stunning. Love this line: "extends proboscis straw, sips ladylike,"

    1. Thank you. Actually had to look the term up for how the butterfly feeds. It basically rolls its tongue into a straw that is called a proboscis--and all this time I thought a proboscis referred to a 'nose!'
