Lead, Follow, or Get Out of the Way

Photo by Steven Kelly

Dragging in low gear, I follow the crowd;
reaching an impasse,  or maybe just stalled…
stuck in this limbo, just spinning my wheels,
trying to inch forward in search of ideals.

That far off horizon beckons to me;
but clouds overhead decline to agree.
It’s time to rev engine—to distance those fears—
and find that fine line where the road disappears.

  2. ha - the title sums it up pretty well already... there are times we just need to find our way esp. after having felt stuck for a while

  7. Sometimes it IS hard to focus on just what is ahead! (And I too enjoyed your rhyme.)

  8. Brilliant! I don't use "Brilliant" loosely here. That first phrase "Dragging in low gear..." sets the stage for the metaphor and analogous link to life. For a short prose piece it packs a big punch. LOVE IT! This is just too good my friend. Thanks for sharing it.

  9. Sometimes you just gotta put the hammer down and blast past them all! It's a good feeling, Cleaning out the carb, they used to call it. I call it cleaning out the soul! Nice write....

  16. Used to be drivers weren't limited by on-ramps and concrete. It takes a lot of extra revving to clear the road, and I find it here within your words.

  18. Nice rhythm and rhyme to this one Ginny. And my favorite lines are your closing:

    It’s time to rev engine—to distance those fears—
    and find that fine line where the road disappears.
