Mirage

Arising from sun-drenched earth
to prey upon time-worn eyes
bending—folding—
once again fading,
to reappear that same
immeasurable distance away…

and I’m left burning;
yearning to melt into
your elusive pool

that I can
            never
                        quite
                                    reach.

  1. its that last drawn out line that brings this all together for me...and really brings on the emotion...of wanting yet never being able to reach...and how unsettling that is...

  2. oy...mirages are mean... always playing with the mind and never being able to reach...ouch...that stings...

  5. Really enjoyed this, Ginny. It works well on so many levels, both as a literal description of the phenomenon and also as a metaphor for the things we desre but do not/cannot have.

  7. Beautiful Ginny--and filled with yearning--for illusions maybe?

  8. I like the pair of heavy, hyphenated words joined by "prey" and the "-ing" words that follow implying continual movement, like the draggging of one's feet, and yet the final destination still elusive. And I love the visual aspect of the final descent just out of reach.

  9. You've caught the essence of mirage in nature and in life. Good one, Ginny.

  10. Nice! Everyone can relate as there is always something or someone that is out of reach. Smart of you to leave it undefined.

  12. It makes me feel my separation from everything and the fact that everything is sort of illusion. 4% known and the rest dark energy.

  13. What a fine verse on the mirage that desire can be. It unfolds before us, making us think we're thirsting for something we didn't even know existed ten minutes before, an illusion indeed. Fine imagery, good work!

  15. A fine rendition on desire/disappointment, illusion/reality. Different from your usual posts, but equally artful and satisfying.
