Mud Season

It’s that season again…

temperatures start to rise,
wheels spin in their tracks,
ruts appear, machinery clogs
as watered-down dirt
surrounds and inundates us.
Without significant leverage,
things stall where they sit.

The stench of manure and
decay, once disguised under
illusion of purity,  reappears
to burn airways, gagging and
choking all within range.

Yeah, the climate is changing…
so get your boots on, and
for god’s sake, tread lightly,
lest you get sucked in.

Mud season is upon us...
            let the slinging begin.

  1. Ginny, Nice focused writing. Your pictures are so emblematic of spring. I love the last two lines--an effectively witty windup to a great snapshot of the season. Excellent piece.

    1. Ah Steve, I guess I got the Spring part right! Was trying to use it as metaphor for the political campaigning. Maybe too much Spring, not enough political reference!

    2. Not at all, Ginny...I'm just dense sometimes! And I've already been negotiating some mud around here.

  2. The end of this is so fun...great image both in nature and in the awful arena of our political landscape. Don't know if I can stand much more. When my sister was dying she said, with her drole sense of humor, at least I don't have to listen to any more campaigning crap. (That was 8 years ago!)

  5. What a fun and thoughtful write! Don't know a lot about politicians but I'll bet the majority of them are proper 'stick-in-the-muds'!

    1. Yes, Helena, and they know how to spread the "manure!"

    1. You got it, Jebbi! A lovely election year of listening to political rhetoric flowing over the "airways" as each candidate waters down their version of the truth, touting how "clean & perfect" they are while slinging and digging crap out of their opponents' pasts. In the meantime, gears lag and stall in congress as Republicans and Democrats can't agree. So definitely, get those "waders" out, as there is going to be a lot of manure to wallow through before the election year is over!!

  11. Great poem Ginny, where would we be without mud and decay!

  12. Ginny! What started as an exploration of spring and the seasons change for me turned into a poem about many different metaphors- maybe you were talking about change or the difficulties in making changes ( as you talk about getting stuck in the mud)...maybe you talk about the safety of a more comfortable season like winter- where everything is consistent - slowed down, almost safe (almost!) either way- this is how your poem spoke to me- and I thought it was very well constructed and thought out ....nice work GB!!!

  13. Haha! You have nailed this. Metaphorically strong and an accurate depiction of my current climate. Mud! Well done.
