By the Sea

Image taken: Ocean City, MD 200d

Let me walk along the shore
in soft-silk sand as toes explore
the wave-kissed edge of surf and sea.

Let me breathe the salt-scent air
and linger here, without a care
as white-capped waves wash over me.

Let me feel the summer sun
set me free and let me run
in tune with nature at the shore.

Invade my soul so when I leave
sweet memories will cling to me
and stay with me forevermore.

  4. Ginny, this is great. I really enjoyed the verse but wow, the video, it brought back a rush of memories. Years ago I used to run the operations for the company I worked for in the Florida market and I was always able to stay at oceanside hotels and one of my favorite things to do was sit out on the balcony and watch the sun set and then even after it became dark, just listening to the crash of the waves. It's odd too, I never had a problem getting up early there, as the breaking light in the AM was another source of great enjoyment. Thanks for bringing those memories back to the surface. Great post

  10. So nice Ginny- beautiful - I love the sea...I love everything about it....and this poem just captured it all....the great thing about this poem is that you captured 'IT'- that intangible feeling and emotion that being in places like these creates...well done to you - stunning

  12. "Set me free and let me run" ... Despite, in a sense, trapping me in the sand, the ocean always sets me free. This is beautiful.

    1. Thank you Alex. While visiting Maryland where the images were taken, we also visited Assateague Island, where the wild ponies run. The particular line you mention was sort of inspired by memories of these lovely animals.

  17. The verse is subtle and gentle, and your video a well-conceived counterpoint to the words.

  18. Very interesting verses--each stanza notes a transformation of some kind and the desire to be something else. You make fine and original use of the sea, which is in my mind the most powerful image/metaphor/symbol we have. Nice work on this Ginny! I always enjoy your work, but I love the compact and very finely crafted nature of this one especially.

    1. Thanks, Steve. I always appreciate your comments and the reasons behind them. Transformation and desire--I suppose subconsciously that was exactly what was on my mind when I wrote this, especially the desire to be back on that beach at that moment! I realize technically the format is similar to but not exactly any 'official' poetic format, such as an ode, or even a Terza Rima, but it worked for what I wanted to write. Just rhyming tercets!
Thanks again for stopping by, my friend.

  19. Ginny, found you at dverse and so glad I did. Your photography alone would make your blog noteworthy, but there was a rhythm and rhyme to your poem (I, too, use forms that are not specific forms; they simply come out that way and it pleases me) that really... WORKED. I was soothed by the sea sounds in the video, too. Took me back to my days entertaining in Bermuda... my days off, dipping toes in the sea, and pregnant with my baby there. Heaven. Thanks!
