Grave Matters

Future unimagined lay before me,
reanimating life was just a dream…
a man of science who observed that lightning
naturally focused power, unforeseen.
Keenly worked in my laboratory—
“Eccentric” whispered those who lived in town;
never knowing what had been created—
subsistence from the corpses underground.
The beauty of the creature once envisioned,
electrified; now hideous to see.
In ceaseless quest for scientific knowledge
now observe that  “monster” lives in me.

  2. This is great - the classic "creation" story and becoming what we create and sometime fear. Well done.

I love the addition of the recording. Is that easy to do?? I was looking around that soundcloud site and it looks pretty user friendly. I really think hearing it in the author voice and cadence add a lot to the poem. (nice accent also)

    1. Sam, Soundcloud is pretty easy to navigate. And you have the option of re-recording until you get it the sound exactly right! Actually got this in one shot today, unusual for me! Guess I was "in the zone!"

  4. I like the difference between the imagined outcome of the experiment in reanimation and the actual result.

Thank you for joining in on Real Toads (hosted this week by Isadora Gruye.)

  6. Oh...all the best of erieness, that you final lines drop on the reader. I really enjoyed listening to you read it too Ginny.
Oh,and re. the comment you made about my piece that bending time made you think of Doctor Who, lol, that's what I was thinking about when I wrote that line! That and also a book called A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline l'Engle. If you've never read it I highly recommend it. And set in New England too if I remember correctly.

  8. How did I miss this? Must have been one of the few challenges I didn't participate in. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley is a fantastic read - and to think how quickly she wrote it boggles the mind! You have penned a lovely poem that does her quite the honor - and also reminds us we all have to beware the monster that resides inside each and every one of us!
