Excerpts

Do you remember that summer long ago?
Hottest week in August, as I recall.
We got to the trailer on the beach--
damn sight-unseen summer rental;
had to clean it out and make it fit for use
before we could even bring our stuff in.
We didn’t care…
We were so much younger then.
I remember.

We took in that fresh sea air
like we couldn’t get enough...
Watched the gulls spiral overhead,
and those little birds, the sandpipers,
being chased up and down by the waves.
I still feel the sand stinging our faces in the wind,
and taste the salt clinging to our lips.
Spent our days splashing in the surf
turning nutmeg in the sun…
walking to that little Clam shack for fritters.
The waves sang us to sleep each night.
We were so much younger then…

I remember.

  8. Nice how you went back in the moment of the past
With each word creating a picture so vast
I'm sure it can also occur again
    Maybe another time or ten

  16. Those little trips back to childhood become more frequent the older we become. This was a rather touching tribute to that!

  23. This is a lovely memory picture. Inconveniences and unexpected problems were easier then, when we were younger, and able to shrug them off and have a good time.

  28. Nice shore holiday images, so wistful for younger days.

I spent many a summer week and weekend at Ocean City, MD. So of course I fell into a reverie of shared experience. Responded to your revellie of common experience. Thanks for making me taste that savory salt again.

Back then, we paid the stewards to set up an umbrella and two chairs each morning on prime territory just at the water's edge. Too long ago. Too many wine coolers since, so long ago that last day we tread upon the old boardwalk...
